Why Continuing Education Is Critical in Risk Management and Insurance

In today’s fast-moving world, careers are no longer “set and forget.” This is especially true in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI), where professionals must adapt to new risks, regulations, and technologies. Randy Jouben, CPCU, ARM, CBCP, MBCI, Chief of the Risk Management Division at Fairfax County Government, knows this better than most.

“Continuing education is paramount to insurance professionals’ careers,” Randy says. That commitment to ongoing learning is what has shaped his own success and what he looks for when hiring new talent.

Credentials That Speak for You

Professional designations, certifications, and advanced training signal to employers that you’ve invested in yourself. “I always look for designations, whether they’re in safety, claims, or loss control,” Randy notes. These credentials show a candidate’s critical thinking skills and help them stand out in the hiring process.

Dedicate Time to Growth

Randy recommends setting aside 10–15% of your work time for professional development. That could mean pursuing a CPCU, attending conferences, volunteering on a committee, or even networking with other professionals.

For students, building important soft skills like communication, business etiquette, and customer service can come through internships, school clubs, or even part-time jobs. The point is to stay engaged and keep building your skillset.

A Lesson That Applies Everywhere

While Randy’s advice is grounded in risk management and insurance, the principle of continuous learning applies across all professions. From healthcare to finance to technology, those who keep sharpening their knowledge are better equipped to lead and adapt. It mirrors what employers in many career fields want: candidates who show curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to grow.
