There’s an App for That — And a Creative Career in Insurance, Too

There’s an App for That — And a Creative Career in Insurance, Too

When you think about careers in insurance, you might picture sales agents or claims adjusters. And sure, those roles are important. But what if we told you that the industry also needs app designers, video producers, writers, game developers, and content creators?

That’s right — insurance is a place where creative minds and tech-savvy innovators can thrive. And there’s a great story we featured a few years back that shows just that!

A Student-Built Insurance App That Won Awards

Back in 2016, a group of students from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland — led by Dr. Martin Eling — created a mobile app that helped other students understand how insurance works. It broke down complex topics like risk management and insurance theory using interactive games, case studies, and even a quiz show-style feature modeled after "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," a popular game show at the time.

What started as a classroom experiment turned into a tool recognized by the American Risk and Insurance Association, earning the team the Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award. We love this story. It’s a powerful example of how innovation, creativity, and collaboration can change the way people engage with insurance.

What Roles Made This Happen?

To bring the app to life, the team needed more than insurance know-how. They needed:

  • Programmers and developers to build the platform
  • Designers to make the interface intuitive and appealing
  • Writers and educators to break down content clearly
  • Videographers and editors to produce engaging learning videos
  • Project managers and communicators to bring it all together

This was an insurance education project, but it looked a lot like a startup tech team. That’s what made it so exciting.

Why This Matters Today

Gen Z is changing the workplace and bringing fresh expectations around technology, flexibility, and purpose. If you're someone who enjoys building things, solving problems, telling stories, or designing great user experiences, your skills are needed.

Insurance companies today are investing in digital transformation, creating apps and platforms, launching educational campaigns on TikTok and YouTube, and looking for ways to engage new audiences. There's space for you here — whether you're into UX design, video storytelling, content strategy, or even gamifying learning experiences.

Bottom Line: Bring Your Whole Self to Insurance

The old image of insurance as a suit-and-tie-only world is outdated. Yes, we still need the core roles — but we also need visionaries, innovators, and creators.

So, if you're creative, curious, and maybe a little app-obsessed, know that there’s a place for you in risk management and insurance! Check out a few of the many roles in insurance at insuremypath.org/careers
