Gilberto Solbes swore that he wasn’t going to work in insurance.

“All my life, I’ve been surrounded by the insurance industry because my parents are insurance brokers,” he said.

He still loved math, though, and made plans to pursue a career in finance. But in college, he wound up taking a course on insurance, and to his surprise, he “totally loved it.”

That led him to pursue an intensive program for recent graduates with Swiss Re, the world’s second-largest reinsurance company. (Reinsurance is essentially insurance for insurance companies.) While difficult, it secured him a position as a life and health pricing actuary at Swiss Re’s office in Mexico City.

Working at an international company with a headquarters in Zurich has its perks, Solbes said. He traveled to Switzerland last year for training, and he will again this year.

“Zurich is gorgeous,” he said, adding that the program is “really neat…and you get to know people from all over the world.”

For anyone curious about what else makes an insurance career appealing, Solbes said that you constantly learn and do new things.

“If you’re looking for something that’s different every day and don’t want to stick with the same type of job or business every day, insurance is definitely one of the best opportunities,” he said. Solbes found that an insurance career offers “a lot of diversity in terms of things to do every day.”

For him, it’s also a meaningful career. Working in life and health, he knows that he’s affecting people’s lives for the better.

“It helps make our world more resilient,” he said.
